August 20, 2005 - Big Brothers/Big Sisters Omnium presented by Team Sotheby's

August 20th was our Big Brothers/Big Sisters Omnium presented by Team Sotheby's. The day started with a track class for a group of great kids and a few of their mentors from the the Big Brothers / Big Sisters program. Also joining in the class were a few Category 2 roadies from Team Carina who planned to race that evening (they did and had a blast), each making a generous donation to the BBBS program. Kudos to Ken Avchen for teaching the class and Mitch Friedman for taking photos.

There were a lot of new faces among the 49 riders who contested the Omniums and it's a positive sign that track racing is once again on the upswing. Now, if we could get half of the people who've raced at Encino this year to attend regularly, we would have full fields and possibly even separate the Cat 3's to their own category. Rather than our usual USCF categories for this event, we used an "A" (mostly 1's and 2's, 3's and women can self-select in), "B" (some 2's, 3's and strong 4's, women can self select in), "C" (newer track riders and those who don't have fitness to do A or B) and Juniors (10-12 year olds) format. But one thing is for sure, there wasn't an easy category this night, as even the C's included several category 2 road riders making their track debut. Let's hope they caught the fever!

Thanks to Sotheby's and Big Brothers/Big Sisters for their sponsorship of the event, to Tim Roach (train2win) for volunteer announcing and to Bill Dean for helping me close shop after the event!

Strong team work contributed to overall wins in each of the three categories. Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Bill Dean, each of Veloworx Racing, won the C's and B's, respectively, while Brian Smallwood (Encino Velo) took top honors in the A's due to strong teamwork in the points race. Ben Bertiger (PAA / Merrill Lynch) won all three events in the Juniors Omnium.
